Linen Clothing in South Africa

Linen is the most ancient of fabrics, with such a rich and romantic heritage.

We love the feeling of linen, its natural richness, and how it gets better with use and becomes softer and silkier over time. We use only the best quality 100% Irish linen (200gsm – medium weight) for our clothing collection, available in various colours. Our linen clothing is hand-made with great passion and care in our studio in Centurion, South Africa.

Linen is the oldest known textile. It’s a sustainable fabric made from flax fibers from the flax plant (yes, that same plant that gives us flax seeds for nutrition). It is grown mostly in Western Europe and Ukraine. The highest quality fabrics are produced in Ireland, Italy, and Belgium, but linens are also produced in many other European countries and in India.

Carbon-dating has proved that linen was used as clothing in Egypt dating back many thousands of years.

The flax plant grows on a yearly cycle and does not require a lot of water or maintenance. This was the perfect combination for Egyptian farmers. The yearly flooding of the Nile provided enough water and nutrients to germinate the flax seeds, which then required intermittent watering for the next 100 days. Ancient Egyptian linen, although much coarser compared with today’s modern linen, was used for clothing, decorations, bags, bedding, and most famously as the burial garment for mummies.

Much the same process is used today as was used back in the days of Ancient Egypt but improvements in linen production have made linen more affordable. The invention of mechanized spinning and weaving increased linen production exponentially.

Today linen is being rediscovered as an everyday fabric. Linen is extremely durable, breathable, and comfortable, making it one of the most popular textiles in history.

Linen clothing is sustainable and beautiful – Investing in a good quality linen piece is always a good idea.
